Kate Gaskin recently paired our Cuddle Platforms with Romance Was Born's latest collection in an incredible runway show at VAMFF. We asked her to tell us her personal style secrets and the most exciting trends to watch out for.

Tell us a bit about yourself, Kate…
"I am a freelance stylist based in Melbourne. I generally work across stills shoots for advertising and editorial, events and runway. I love travelling, and with a background in fine art I try and take in as many exhibitions and movies as I can in my downtime."

You styled our Cuddle Platform (coming soon, stay tuned!) in the Harpers Bazaar Runway at VAMFF, is that a hint to the accessory trend you’re most excited about for next season? 
"Hmm yes, the Cuddle Platforms were a huge hit! Obviously faux fur is a key trend for the season, and the fact that a lot of designers such as MIMCO and the likes of premium international labels are now doing incredible faux fur options makes wearing on-trend pieces not only sustainably viable but also ethical. Velvet is also everywhere at the moment which is something I'm very excited about. I love the idea of high-low dressing – mixing a casual denim and a simple tee back with a dressy velvet heel and statement clutch for an unexpected edge and instant wardrobe update."

What has been the most memorable part of VAMFF 2017 for you?
"Definitely seeing all our hard work come to life on the runway last night. Huge projects such as VAMFF take several months of planning and execution, and then finally seeing your vision realised is one of the most rewarding and memorable parts of the job. Also working with such esteemed and talented Australian designers across the shows is a huge highlight."

You’ve been on the judging panel for the National Graduate Showcase at VAMFF previously, what do you love about discovering new designers/fashion? 
"The unbridled creativity, exquisite attention to detail and craftsmanship showcased in the student collections is mind blowing. The fact that the garments don't need to be commercially viable at this stage means they can really explore different fabrics and techniques that would otherwise be too expensive to produce in the commercial ready-to-wear market. Their hunger and drive is so inspiring to be around, and the passion for their craft is evident when discussing processes and design inspiration. It is a real honour to be exposed to such young enthusiasm and innovation, and to get an insiders perspective into their way of thinking."

What is your approach to accessorising? 
"My personal style is generally very casual and low key, so I love the fact that you can completely transform your look with the addition of a key statement accessory. I love statement earrings and necklaces, and have a slight addiction to shoes. Accessories are also key to my styling aesthetic, they often complete a look and add a point of interest.

The right accessory can also help tell a story of the wearer's personality, be it a dark and moody look finished with an oversized black hat, a bright red heel and block coloured bag to add a vibrant touch to an extrovert's look, or a beaded clutch and earring combo to compliment an embellished evening ensemble."

If you had to choose only one ideal “investment” piece, what would it be?
"I have been eyeing off the Celine woven shoe range for a long time and am especially enamoured with the white flats. They are of course highly impractical and not ideal for a size 41 foot, but their construction and design is a work of art and may have to make their way into my wardrobe as a reward for all my work on VAMFF!"

Who are the women that have inspired you in your life and career? 
"I find Grace Coddington extremely inspiring. She has such an incredible eye and wide-ranging body of work, yet remains humble and gracious.

I also really admire Katie Grand – she has such a unique outlook and style that can translate across different aesthetics and sensibilities."

How important do you think it is to take risks? 
"It is important to take risks, as long as they're measured. I think it's essential to keep challenging yourself and step outside of your comfort zone to keep you inspired and informed."
