Behind the design: Jewellery

Drop by MIMCO HQ on any given day and our design bench is generally filled with glimmering raw materials, specialist tools and our talented jewellery designers.

Senior MIMCO Jewellery Designer, Sophie, lets us in on how her team dreamt up our latest collection...

What were the inspirations behind the shapes and silhouettes in the collection?

For our In The Fold collection we were inspired by Frank Gehry’s structural architecture, which we translated into ribbon-like silhouettes with high-shine folded metal. This collection also acted as a modern re-imagining of the iconic MIMCO bow.

Another major inspiration was surrealism with elements of futurism. The silhouettes of our Limited Edition piece and our Nightlife collection are based on the faceted shapes of the individual custom-made glass stones.

Which tones did you focus on and why?

A deep twilight blue, a dreamy orange sorbet shade and sleek clear stones were chosen
to ensure the pieces felt light and wearable, and so they could all work back with one another.

Those crystal colours were then complemented by high-shine rose gold;
we felt that the softer tones were the perfect juxtaposition to the rigid shapes.

Do you have a favourite piece?

My personal favourite would have to be the Perplex Drop Ear, which was actually the
first piece to be designed in the Collection.

It was quite an instinctive design and I let the crystal shapes speak for themselves.
I also love how wearable and versatile this piece is.
